Organic farming is one of the most popular food-related industries today, and many consumers are incorporating these products into their daily lives. However, for many people, this entire industry is an enigma that they cannot hope to understand, and the hundreds of labels that we are faced with in grocery stores do not help at all.
There are plenty of good reasons to transition to organic products, and it would be a shame to miss out on their benefits simply because of these organic farming myths.
Organic Is Just A Marketing Label
This is not true in any way or form at all. Back in 2002, the USDA came up with regulations that need to be followed for a supplier to sell their products under an organic label. These are very strict regulations, which include growing conditions, soil composition, proximity to run-off, pesticide use, and other factors.
There are far too many requirements that you need to follow just to sell your products under the organic label, so it’s a bit of a stretch to say that it’s just a marketing gimmick, especially when you take into consideration the fact that this drains a lot of resources while you work on meeting these regulations.
Organic Means 100% Organic
It is very easy for consumers can be misled by clever labeling and packaging tricks to think that a product is completely organic when they see labels that say “contains” or “made with organic ingredients”. It can be easy to assume that as long as the word organic is in there, it means that it is a hundred percent organic. However, labels can be tricky, and it’s important to learn the nuances between them.
You should know that there are four categories of the organic label: “One Hundred Percent Organic” means exactly that. A label that simply says, “Organic” means that 95% or more of the ingredients are organic. If it says “Made with Organic Ingredients” then this indicates at least 70% of ingredients are organic and anything less than 70% cannot make any organic claims.
Organic Food is Healthier
While organic farming products are cleaner than their conventional alternative, you should keep in mind that it’s definitely possible for organic food and products to be organic. Remember, it’s entirely possible for junk food to be a hundred percent organic and still be unhealthy for you. Like everything else in life, moderation is key, even with organic products.
