When people hear the term organic farming, they understand it to mean as a method of farming that does not use chemical pesticides, insecticides, and fertilizers to boost the production of crops and other food products. While this is the primary difference between conventional farming methods and organic farming, ecological agriculture is more than just that.
Organic farming is low-input farming, which means that it uses natural sources of nutrients such as compost, crop residues, manure, and natural methods of crop and weed control instead of using synthetic or inorganic agrochemicals.
The main objectives of this type of farming are to increase genetic diversity, promote more usage of natural pesticides, ensure the right soil cultivation at the right time, keep and build good soil structure and fertility, and control pests, diseases, and weeds.
There are basically two types of organic farming: pure organic farming and integrated organic farming. With pure organic farming, the method includes the use of manures and biopesticides with complete avoidance of inorganic chemicals and pesticides.
In integrated organic farming, the combination of nutrients management and integrated pest management is used. The development of crops from natural resources produce the complete nutritive value that prevents the crops and plants from being infested by pests and weeds.
Then, there are four techniques used in farming organically, and these are crop rotation, green manure, biological pest control, and compost.
Crop rotation refers to the growing of various kinds of crops in the same area, depending on the season and in a sequential manner. Green manure refers to the dying of the plants that are uprooted and turning them into the soil to act as fertilizer.
Biological pest control is the use of living organisms to control pests with or without the use of chemicals while compost is recycled matter that is highly rich in nutrients. It is used as fertilizer in the agricultural farms.
Organic farming helps sustain the environment and aids in providing healthy food options to consumers. Since natural habitats are less threatened because of the non-use of pesticides and insecticides, environmentalists have been advocating the use of organic farming than the conventional methods of farming.
And because natural fertilizer is being used on the soil, it is in better condition since it is not being contaminated by chemical and synthetic substances.
This allows the soil to cultivate and grow crops, plants, and other vegetation and food products.
