Organic Farming: It’s Important to Know Your Produce’s Pesticide Levels

The reason why people are going with organic farming food products these days is because of the pesticides, insecticides, and other chemicals that can be found in conventionally-grown food. But organic foods are also known to be slightly more expensive than conventionally-grown foods. As such, if you have a limited budget, you can choose the food wherein you should go organic and that which you can buy conventional. 

Some types of conventionally-grown foods have higher levels of pesticides compared to others. These are the foods that you should avoid. If possible, go organic on these foods. Buying these conventionally will put you at many health risks including rashes, blisters, nausea, dizziness, and diarrhea. In some cases, these can cause medical conditions such as cancer and heart problems.

What Are These Foods?

The following fruits and vegetables have high levels of pesticides: apples, sweet bell peppers, cucumbers, celery, potatoes, grapes, cherry tomatoes, kale, summer squash, nectarines, spinach, peaches, strawberries, and hot bell peppers. If you are in the habit of buying these products, make sure to buy their organic versions. Consuming these products regularly can cause adverse effects on your health. 

While there are foods with high levels of pesticides, there are also those that have normal levels of the chemical. Although it is still better to buy these organically, you can choose conventional versions of asparagus, avocado, onion, papaya, mushrooms, pineapple, cabbage, sweet peas, sweet corn, sweet potatoes, eggplant, grapefruit, kiwi, cantaloupe, and mango. 

Buying Organic Meat, Eggs, and Dairy

If can afford to, buy organic meat, eggs, and dairy. The American Heart Association sticks with their study that saturated fat from any source can increase the risk of heart diseases. However, other health experts said the risks are not greater when you consume meat and dairy products grown with organic farming methods instead. They don’t carry the same risks as those raised through industrial means. The problem with animals raised in a conventional farm is they are exposed to corn, hormones, and medication. 

So, what’s in these animals? Dairy cows are exposed to antibiotics, pig and chicken byproducts, growth hormones, pesticides, and even sewage sludge. Beef cows also have in their systems steroids and hormones aside from antibiotics, pesticides, and sewage sludge. Pigs are exposed to the same things with the addition of arsenic-based drugs. Egg-laying hens are exposed to antibiotics, animal byproducts, pesticides, sewage sludge, and arsenic-based drugs, too. 

Be careful with the food you eat. Choose it well, so you don’t suffer the consequences later on in life.
