Organic Farming: Why Organic Food Is Worth the High Price

When people hear the term organic food, what they immediately think about is the high price tag. Organic food tends to be more expensive than food grown through conventional means. Why is that? Organic farming yields fewer crops because the farmers don’t use synthetic fertilizers and growth hormones. The crops in an organic farm use natural resources to grow and thrive. This alone makes organic food more valuable. 

In a study by Consumer Reports, it found out that organic food is at least 47% more expensive than food grown conventionally. However, a separate study also suggested that the benefits of eating organic food far outweigh its heftier price tag. Food grown organically are less likely to carry chemicals and substances that can harm the body. Consumers are protected from a variety of illnesses and diseases that they mostly get from consuming fertilizer-enriched food. 

The cost of treating these diseases will outweigh the difference in the prices of conventional and organic goods. With the health care system in limbo because of the coronavirus, making sure you eat only healthy food is one of the ways you can protect yourself from contracting the virus. Your immune system should be able to battle its way out of being infected. 

It wasn’t too long ago when organic farming was derided as idealistic and inefficient. Farmers can rarely profit from growing organic products because they cannot multiple their yields with synthetic substances. This was back in the 80s when only a couple of studies are available for researchers to dive into. 

But by the turn of the century, there is 40 years’ worth of available data for researchers and scientists to consider. They can now make data-based decisions on the value and worth of organic farming. 

The results of the research are astounding. The scientists found out that organic agriculture is responsible for several types of sustainability, ranging from productivity to impact on the environment to social wellbeing to economic viability. Organic farming produces economic opportunities for the agricultural sector. It is profitable for farmers. It also produces healthy food products that lessen the chances of people contracting different types of diseases. 

The chain of organic farming is what makes it valuable to society. As it produces jobs and supports the interaction between farmers and consumers, it also benefits the soil and reduces the adverse impact of conventional farming on the environment. These benefits alone should push people to consume only organic food, a bit pricey they think it might be.
