Soil Fertility in Organic Farming

What makes an organic farming method successful? How can an organic farm yield the right number of crops even without using commercial fertilizers and additives? That’s because of the fertility of the soil. Fertile and nutrient-packed soil will grow plants, vegetation, fruits, and crops to a healthy level. They won’t need the use of synthetic fertilizers that are usually subjected to scrutiny by the public and health experts.   But what makes the soil fertile? What should soil contain for it to be considered fertile? Fertile soil needs all the major nutrients a plant needs such as nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium. It must also have some minor nutrients such as calcium, magnesium, sulfur, zinc, iron, nickel, boron, copper, and molybdenum. The soil needs the major nutrients in large doses while the minor nutrients can be had in smaller quantities.   Normally, or in the conventional farming method, farmers would use commercial fertilizers, additives, and chemicals to boost the fertility of the soil. They also add some chemicals to change the pH balance of the soil to between 6 and 7. This is the optimum level for nutrient availability.   But in an organic setting, what the soil needs are organic materials such as compost, manure, and other waste products. Organic farmers cannot add chemicals or additives in the soil because this will change the nutrients found in the soil. The conditions in the soil will also be unfavorable for plants, fruits, vegetation, and crops.   However, experts agree that farmers are also responsible for making sure that all farming practices are environmentally sustainable. In order for organic farming to be truly successful, farmers must use only the most natural and organic way of improving the nutrient and fertility level of the soil. This is the only way for the soil to grow the crops at a pace that the farmers expect.   What happens when soil fertility is not managed correctly? What can happen if farmers choose to use commercial and synthetic chemicals to boost the nutrient level of the soil? Such chemicals can contaminate lakes, waterways, rivers, streams, and groundwater. Since these chemicals will be carried over to bodies of water, there is no reason to doubt that they will eventually find themselves in communities.   This is the reason why organic farmers must only use environment-friendly additives and soil fertility boosters. Not to mention, chemical additives are known to be expensive and quite harmful to consumers when taken in large doses.
