While you are not obligated or required to go completely organic, you can start small right now and begin living a healthier and more conscientious lifestyle. The Department of Agriculture has defined organic products as those that grew on land that is free from all fertilizers, pesticides, and other chemicals for the past three years. They should never have been fertilized by sewage sludge and irradiation, and did not use genetically modified seeds.

Going organic isn’t exactly cheap, though, so the most common problem is how to buy them and still be within your budget. Here are some tips you can use:

Shop at your regular grocery store

You don’t have to go too far. Continue shopping in your regular grocery store as we are sure they have organic products you can choose from. High-end grocery stores or natural foods stores are not the only ones that sell organic produce. Chain stores such as Target, Walmart, Costco, Safeway, and Kroger also carry organic brands.

Buy products in bulk

Individually packed items are usually more expensive than simply buying in bulk. Whole oats, brown rice, and organic beans, for example, are cheaper when you buy them in bulk because you are avoiding paying all the cost of the nice packaging these organic products usually come in.

Try in-season produce

Instead of looking for very specific organic products, why don’t you try out the organic products that are in-season. This means you are following the season’s produce rather than paying for the transportation of these organic products from wherever place they are in season. The other benefit is that eating in-season produce will mix up your season offerings.

You can actually buy shares from a local organic farm and enjoy the benefits of CSA or community-supported agriculture. Every week, you will receive a box or organic produce from the farm where you are a shareholder. You’re not only starting a healthier lifestyle, you are also helping out the local community and local farmers.

Consume less meat
